How To Color A Sunflower With Colored Pencils

Here is step by step how to color a sunflower using colored pencils.

I recently finished coloring a beautiful sunflower using colored pencils, and I’m so excited to share it with you!

Sunflowers have always been one of my favorite flowers to color because of their bright, cheerful petals. It was a fun and relaxing project, and I hope it brings a little joy to your day too!

Sunflowers are a favorite fall flower because of their warm, golden hues that perfectly match the season.

Their tall, sturdy stems and large blooms make them a symbol of strength and positivity, which is why they often remind people of autumn’s cozy, uplifting vibes.

Sunflowers bloom toward the end of summer and into early fall, adding a final burst of color before the cooler weather sets in. Whether in a garden or artwork, these flowers always brighten up the season.

Castle Arts Colored Pencils

For this sunflower coloring page, download the Floral Aesthetics #1 collection and use your favorite colored pencils. I’m using Castle Arts but you can use whatever colored pencils you have on hand.

Step 1

Choose your colors. If you are following along using our printable coloring page, then you can select 5 colors and color in the color swatch. I’m using Lemon Yellow, Venetian Red, Cerulean Blue, Oxide Of Chrome and Van Dyke Brown.

Step 2

Using your yellow shade, color in the whole sunflower with light strokes. Don’t press down too much, just color it in nice and light.

Step 3

Now it’s time to color all of the sunflower petal tips. Using the same yellow color, go over all of the tips making them darker.

Step 4

Take your red color and start to color in the bottom of the petals. Go up the lines adding color here and there. You can go over the yellow parts a bit to add layers of color that will start to blend.

Step 5

Take the brown color and go over the bottom of the petals and bring up the color more into the red and yellow parts.

Step 6

With your yellow color, start going over the whole flower blending the colors together and making it more vibrant.

Step 7

With the red colored pencil, go over the outside of the center of the flower using heavier strokes, really make it stand out so that you can see the ring, It will look like a shadow.

Step 8

Now it’s time to color in the center of the flower using your blue colored pencil. Just use light coloring at this time. You will go over it again with a darker shade.

Step 9

Color in the left hand side with the brown color. This will give the middle more depth. The right side will stay lighter to make it appear that the light is coming from that side.

step 10

Color in the stem by first using a light green and then going over it with your yellow color at the edges.

And it’s done! I hope you enjoyed this tutorial. If you followed along, please share your finished piece with us on Instagram. Our handle is @diycoloringartistry.
