How To Color a Night Sky With Alcohol Markers
Here is how to color a night sky for beginners using alcohol markers. Coloring a night sky with alcohol markers is a simple and relaxing project that doesn’t require a lot of layering. Alcohol markers blend smoothly, which makes it easy to create soft gradients and rich tones for a sky scene. In this tutorial, I’ll go step by step to show you how to use your markers to bring out deep blues, yellows, shadows and highlights. This is if you are just starting out with blending or want a quick project that still looks stunning when finished.

I have always loved the way the night sky looks on paper, and it has become one of my favorite things to color. There is something peaceful about filling a page with deep shades of blue and adding the soft sparkle of stars. For me, it feels relaxing and rewarding, like a quiet moment at the end of the day. I wanted to create a tutorial that makes this effect easy, so you can enjoy the same calm feeling while bringing your own sky to life.
How To Color A Night Sky
I’ll walk you through the steps for coloring your night sky with alcohol markers. Each step is simple and clear, making it easy to follow along and see your page come to life. There’s a video tutorial that shows exactly how I did this below.
Supplies Needed To Color A Night Sky
I’m using a Vivi Tinta coloring book for this DIY but feel free to use any coloring book you have on hand.
Alcohol Markers: Use whatever alcohol markers you have on hand. You will need a dark blue, yellows, greens browns and orange colors.
Gel Pens: I like using gel pens for highlighting different parts of the sky.
White Gel Pen: This is for adding highlights and for making the stars.
Step 1: Color the Sky
Start with a dark blue alcohol marker and fill in the night sky. Be careful around the moon and stars, since alcohol markers can spread a little past the lines. Go over some areas to create some darker cloudy spots.

Step 2: Color the Moon and Stars
Use a light yellow alcohol marker to fill in the moon and stars. This will give them a soft glow against the dark sky. Then go over that with a bright yellow gel pen on the parts where the moon’s glow would naturally be on them.

Step 3: Add Tiny Stars
Take a white gel pen and dot small stars across the sky. Vary the size of the dots to make them look natural.

Step 4: Color the Mountains
Begin with a light green alcohol marker on the lower areas of the mountains. Then layer in brown on the upper areas for depth and contrast.

Step 5: Color the Window Frame
Fill in the highlighted area of the window with a light yellow gel pen or alcohol marker to show the glow of moonlight. Then, use a dark brown alcohol marker to color the rest of the window frame.

Step 6: Color the Plant And pot
Add a light green highlight on the side of the plant that faces the moon. Then go over the rest with a darker green alcohol marker to create shadow and depth.

Take an orange marker and color the side of the pot that faces the moon to show reflected glow. Shade the rest with a darker orange or brown to make it look rounded and realistic.

And just like that, your night sky scene is complete! From the deep, glowing blues of the sky to the sparkling stars and soft moonlight, every detail comes together to create a magical, peaceful scene. The mountains, window, and plant add depth and warmth, making your page feel alive and full of atmosphere. Take a moment to step back and enjoy all the colors you’ve blended, the highlights you added, and the little touches that make this night sky uniquely yours.

Coloring the night sky doesn’t have to be complicated. With just a few simple steps, you can create a page that feels calm and glowing, almost like looking up at the real stars. I hope you enjoy this tutorial and that it inspires you to add your own creative touch. I would love to see your finished skies, be sure to share your versions in the DIY Coloring Artistry Facebook group so we can all enjoy each other’s artwork.
