Color In Gray Colors
Coloring this way is a relaxing way to give your coloring pages that moody feeling. In this tutorial, I show you how to pick colors, layer them, and add highlights. Follow these simple steps to make your gray pages pop.
Step 1: Picking out your markers
The first step in coloring is picking out your markers and coloring book. You want a few shades that work well together, like a light, medium, and dark tone. This makes it easier to add different shades and smooth blends on the gray areas of your coloring page. Alcohol markers, water based markers, or even colored pencils can work, so use what you have and feel comfortable with. Picking colors that contrast a little with the gray will help your page really pop. I’m using Ohuhu alcohol markers for this tutorial.

For the coloring book, I’m using Fuzzy Friends by Vivi Tinta If you don’t have this coloring book, just grab a free printable coloring page and print it out.

Step 2: Start with the lightest color
Once you’ve picked your markers, start with the lightest color first. Color the areas where the light would naturally hit the picture, like the tops of shapes or parts that look raised. Using the lightest shade first makes it easier to layer darker colors later without over darkening your page. Work slowly and follow the shapes in your coloring book to keep everything smooth and even.

Step 3: Add the medium shades
Next, take your medium shades and start adding them to areas where you want a slightly darker gray to show up. Think about where the gray tones in your coloring page are darker, or where one shape overlaps another. Take your time because alcohol markers can really spread out depending on what type of paper you are using.

Step 4: Add the darkest colors
Now take your darkest colors and add them to the areas with the deepest shadows. Focus on corners, folds, or places that look farther away. Blend them gently into the medium colors or use them on their own so the transition stays smooth and natural. This step really makes your gray page look full of life. Adding the darkest colors last helps your colors stand out and gives your page a finished look.

Step 5: Add highlights and finishing touches
Finally, add highlights and small details to make your page shine. You can use a white gel pen, acrylic paint markers and metallic gel pens to bring out the brightest spots. Look at your page and see where light would naturally hit, like the tops of shapes or edges that catch light. Take a step back and see if any areas need a little extra blending or color touch ups. These finishing touches make your page look fantastic.
